1)      ALAS is an expression of sadness, grief, concern, pity, sorrow.

2)      Today some might say something like WOW, though this is not quite as respectful in this case.

3)      This song says our Savior bled and this should have a significant impact on our lives.

4)      This morning we will look at the “bleeding savior” from the standpoint of the first four NT books.

a)      Our beginning point is Mt. 26.

5)      Mt. 26:31– READ

6)      Jesus offered a very special prayer – verse 39 – READ

7)      Jesus not only prayed this prayer once, He prayed it two more times (verse 44).

8)      Verse 45 says the time came when Jesus was “betrayed into the hands of sinners.”

9)      Verse 47 – READ

10)  After Jesus was taken into custody He began to go through a series of trials.

11)  Verse 57 refers to His being taken to the house of “Caiaphas” where “scribes and elders” were.

12)  Mt. 26:67 says Jesus was “spit on” and this act was not done on His clothing.

a)      Then we come to Mt. 27; here we find Jesus was “scourged” – verse 26 – READ

b)      The treatment in Mt. 26 was not pleasurable; the “scourging was enough to actually kill people.

13)  Then Jesus experienced the things described in verses 29-30 – READ

14)  Jesus was offered a pain killer (verse 34), but He refused to drink it.

15)  The crucifixion is recorded in verse 35 and the mockery He faced is found in verse 44.

 THESE ARE THE BASIC FACTS FROM MATTHEW SO LET’S TURN TO THE NEXT ACCOUNT OF WHAT JESUS FACED; THIS IS FOUND IN MARK 14.

 a)      Verse 56 of Mk. 14 says “many” came forward to serve as “false witnesses” against Jesus.

b)      Jesus was abused physically, mentally, and verbally.

2)      Notice this little detail from Mk. 15:19 – READ

3)      Jesus received “worship” before His death – people kneeled before Him and offered worship.

4)      Jesus was brought to the place of death and crucified with “two malefactors” (Lk. 23:33).

5)      Here is what we find in verse 34 – READ

6)      Jesus’ concern for others is also seen in John’s account.

7)      Jn. 19:25 says “stand by the cross of Jesus his mother.”

8)      The time came when He used some of His strength to send her away, verse 27.

 WITH THE BASIC FACTS IN MIND ABOUT JESUS’ DEATH ON THE CROSS, LET’S RETURN TO THE WORDS THAT WE OFTEN SING.

 a)      The question “did my savior bleed” is almost rhetorical – YES He did!

b)      He bled from the crown of thorns that was placed on His head.

2)      His body would have bled from the scourging He received.

3)      His body may have bled because of the people who struck Him in the face.

4)      We sing in our song:  Was it for crimes I had done that He “groaned” upon the tree?  Yes; this is true.

5)      Since Jesus has done this for us, we need to have a “thankful heart” (line four).

6)      We sing “melt mine eyes with tears.”

7)      Worship is a time to come and say “thank you” to God.

8)      It is also a time to remember Jesus’ death that saves us from sin.

a)      There is the “Lord’s day” (Rev. 1:10).

b)      The Lord not only has a “day,” He has a “supper.”

9)      Christians remembered Jesus’ death every single week because of what it represents.

10) Are we faithfully serving the One who died for us?
