A lifetime of neglected opportunities

You are familiar with the great Russian writer Leo Tolstoy. Tolstoy’s marriage was a saga of bitterness. His wife carped and complained and clung to her grudges until he could not bear the sight of her. When they had been married almost a half a century, sometimes she would implore him to read to her the exquisite, poignant love passages that he had written about her in his diary forty-eight years previously, when they were both madly in love with each other. As he read of the happy days that were now gone forever, they both wept bitterly.

Is there anything sadder than to look back over a lifetime of neglected opportunities–wasted years when love could and should have been nurtured–and regret that you “blew it?” Some of you know what I am talking about.

This is Father’s Day. Dads don’t get the respect that they used to. Remember “Father Knows Best”?  For many fathers, those were the good old days. A few years ago, a college professor conducted a careful, two year study that asked children aged four to six: “Which do you like better, TV or Daddy?”

Forty-six percent of the youngsters indicated that they preferred television.

I like the story about the ten-year-old boy who answered the doorbell at his home one day. When he opened it, there stood a strange man on the porch. The man said, “Son, you don’t know me, do you?” The young man said, no, he did not. The man replied, “Well, I am your uncle on your father’s side.” To which the young fellow replied, “Well, I am glad to meet you, but you are certainly on the losing side.”

If you need an emergency sermon…

This is about as simple as it gets.  Prior to this lesson you might ask the song leader to sing, “There’s a Great Day Coming.”

1)      If you have turned to Mt. 3, let’s read verses 7-12– READ

a)      The hymn found on page 361 of our books talks about this day and makes three basic points.

b)      There is a GREAT day coming.

c)      This great day will be a BRIGHT day.

d)     This great and bright day will also be a SAD day.

 2)      First, the day Jesus returns to judge the world will be a GREAT day  for several reasons.

3)      It will be GREAT because of who is there.

a)      2 Cor. 5:10 says ALL will be at the Day of Judgment.

b)      In life there are situations where some people cannot attend something.

4)      Not only does everyone come, all show up “on time.”  Jn. 5:28-29 says all the dead are going to be raised up when the Lord returns.

5)      When the Bible says “all” will be there, it is not overstating what is going to take place.

6)      Mt. 12:42 – READ

a)      The Queen of Sheba will be present on the Day of Judgment.

b)      This queen will not be alone.  Every earthly ruler – from the first to the last – will be present.

c)      Mt. 16:27.

7)      Consider the promise that “every man” will be “rewarded according to his works.”

8)      The GREATNESS of this day will also be seen in the fact that its time is unknown.

9)      In Mt. 24:36 Jesus said we “cannot know the day or hour” of His return.

WHEN OUR HYMN SPEAKS ABOUT THE DAY OF JUDGMENT BEING “GREAT” THIS IS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT.  OUR SONG ALSO SPEAKS OF THIS DAY BEING “BRIGHT” AND THIS STATEMENT IS ALSO RIGHT.

a)      Part of the “brightness” will be the Jesus’ appearance.

b)      Jesus 2 Thess. 1:7.

2)      The brightness at the end of time will also apparently come from the earth.

3)      2 Pet. 3:10 speaks of the earth and the “works therein being burned up with fervent heat.”

4)      Mt. 13:43 – READ

5)      Almost everything we know to exist in life loses its luster.

6)      Rom. 2:10.

THERE IS A GREAT AND BRIGHT DAY COMING.  BUT THIS BRIGHTNESS AND GLORY  WILL ALSO BE ACCOMPANIED BY MUCH SADNESS.

a)      The end of time will be sad because many will have to tell God “goodbye.”

2)      Mt. 7:22-12 – READ

3)      Mt. 8:29 – READ

4)      The demons have some knowledge of what life beyond this earth is like.

5)      When sing a SAD day is coming, but we could add a line that says a BAD day is coming.

6)      When people hear “depart from me,” this is going to be the worst day of their life.”

7)      The good news is we do not have to suffer with the demons.

8)      We can be “ready” for the Lord to return whether His return is today or sometime later.

15,000 birthday guests

She might call it “Thessa ‘Moany,’” the chagrined German girl who accidentally invited 15,000 to her private birthday party via Facebook. She certainly will have quite a story to tell her children and grandchildren. Thessa intended to mark the invitation as private, but nearly 1,500 showed up at her Hamburg-Bramfeld home. In fact, she had to leave her own party. Revelers lit a few fires and alcohol flowed freely, as it so often does even among minors in western Europe. Police described the spontaneous event as mostly peaceful.
To me, it is amazing that a social media tool announcing such a relatively insignificant event could have such an impact and draw such a crowd. Certainly, there may be factors at play, not publicly known, that prompted such a showing, but it demonstrates how quickly “the word” can spread.
This amazing technology is a tool we must use to spread the best news and biggest event the world will ever know! Whether social media like Facebook or Twitter, the internet as a whole to stream audio and video, podcasts, blogs, or any other technological tool, God’s people need to utilize the very frontier where Satan is active and busily working. Should pornographic, violent, hateful, false, and harmful messages be the only ones to which people are exposed?
No doubt, it can be done! We can get the Word before everyone in this world and there is no sin in taking shortcuts that move so much quicker than horseback or even ocean liners and steam ships. Though the world population was so much smaller in the first century, there means of spreading the gospel was also, proportionately slower. Yet, they took the gospel, at least representatively, to “every creature under heaven” (Col. 1:23). They went “everywhere” preaching the word (Acts 8:4).
How hungry are people for the gospel in Namibia? Nepal? Chile? Cambodia? What about Stumptown, West Virginia? Honey, Pennsylvania? Cuba, Alabama? There are honest hearts all over the world and in the communities where we live. Let us use every legitimate means to get the word to them, extending them the opportunity to accept the Lord’s invitation and celebrate something better than a 16th birthday–their “new birth” day!

*Christian* social networking sites:

You are probably familiar with big name “social networking sites” like www.facebook.com and www.twitter.com.  Do you also know about the so-called Christian social networking sites?

Several “Christian” social sites have been put forward as you can see from the following links but about half of them have failed/gone defunct for one reason or another.

After sorting through several of the “Christian alternatives” to things like facebook and twitter I have chosen to expand my web presence with the following “Christian social networking services,” one of which is also reputedly used by the “Pope.” Perhaps the following list of “Christian social networking sites” will help expand your on-line presence.

Premillennialism versus the Bible

The following information on Premillennialism comes from my First Corinthians commentary which you can download chapter by chapter for free at this link:  http://bit.ly/jQqYIX

The Premillennial view
Jesus is NOT now reigning
Jesus will BEGIN His reign at His return
Jesus will ESTABLISH a kingdom at His return
Saved people are NOT now in the kingdom.
Jesus will gather with His people ON THE EARTH

The Scriptures
Jesus IS now reigning (Mt. 6:33; Heb. 1:8)
Jesus will END His reign at His return (1 Cor. 15:28)
Jesus’ kingdom will TERMINATE at His return (1 Cor. 15:24)
Saved people ARE now in the kingdom (Col. 1:13; Rev. 1:9; Jn. 3:5)
Jesus will meet His people IN THE AIR and the earth will be destroyed (2 Pet. 3:10)

To all the preachers who get my posts:

If you use Internet Explorer but have not upgraded to version 9, you may want to do this sooner than later.  There is a GREAT translation feature built into IE 9 that allows you to almost effortlessly translate your sermon and class material into multiple languages.  This is a great and free service to spread the gospel of Christ to people you will never meet and countries you may never visit.

The accuracy tests I have run on the translation service have not involved every language, but the languages that have been checked have proved to be remarkably accurate.

A matter of life and death

“Dr. Rene Spitz of New York made  a study of children in foundling homes to determine what effect love and neglect had on them.  The survey proved that children who were neglected and unloved were much slower in their development, and some of them even died.  Even in the physical sense, love is the very atmosphere of life and growth.

It is even more so in the spiritual sense.

In fact, it is a matter of love or death!”

5 reasons to sing *Give Me The Bible*

WE LIVE IN A TIME WHEN BIBLE READING IN AMERICA IS EITHER A LOW PRIORITY IN THE LIVES OF PEOPLE, OR IT SIMPLY NOT DONE.

 1)      The words in this hymn – page 120 in our books – are very specific.

2)      Each of the four lines in this song say “Give me the Bible.”

3)      We also, when we sing this hymn, talk about WHEN we want the Bible.

a)      The second line says “Give me the Bible when my heart is broken.”

b)      Some go to God’s word when they are sad and burdened.

c)      Books like Psalms are common places for people to turn when life becomes difficult.

d)      The third line in our hymn is not the way many live.

e)      “Give me the Bible, all my steps enlighten.”

 4)      God designed the Bible to be the thing that guides us throughout every aspect of our lives.

5)      In Jer. 10:23 the old prophet said, “It is not in man that walks to direct his own steps.”

6)      This morning we want to consider 5 reasons why our attitude should be:  Give me the Bible.

7)      Our first reason for being interested in the Bible involves its power.

8)      Heb. 4:12 says – READ

9)      Listen to what Paul said in 1 Cor. 6:9-11 – READ

10)  The word of God changed the lives of these people and the changes were all for the better.

11)  Reason # 2:  Give me the Bible because it is good for young people.

12)  Listen to what Paul said to a young man in 2 Tim. 3:15 – READ

13)  Reason # 3:  Give me the Bible because it builds people up.

a)      This reason is based on Acts 20:32 – READ

b)      Some think they can find relief and comfort in a bottle of booze.

c)      Others turn to drugs or a mental health provider.

d)      Some think if they can just get more money they will feel so much better.

14)  Reason # 4:  Give me the Bible because it has never been destroyed.

a)      Lots of people over lots of years have attacked the Bible.

b)      Not one contradiction has ever been proven.  Each one has been answered.

c)      Various officials have tried to destroy copies of the Bible.

15)  Some like Satan have misquoted the Bible (Mt. 4:6), but the word of God still stands.

16)  Others have tried to use God’s word to make false predictions.

17)  Reason # 5 is based on Jn. 12:48 – the Bible will be our judge at the end of time.

18)  Here is what Jesus said in Jn. 12:48 – READ

19)  There is coming a time when all people will come before deity at the end of time.

20)  People will be judged by God’s word.

a)      Think of how many Americans will fare when this time comes.

b)      22% “rarely” read the Scriptures.

c)      24% “never” read the word of God.

d)      53% read the Bible at least once a month.

21)  When we sing “give me the Bible,” these words need to be true in the fullest sense of the word.

22)  Is our attitude “Give me the Bible” and “give it to me every day” or something else?

Ittai the Gittite

What do you know about Ittai the Gittite?  He has a catchy name, and he is found among the many and somewhat obscure characters in the historical books of the Old Testament.  When David’s kingdom was threatened by his own son, Absalom, several men of sterling character stepped up to his side.  We become acquainted with him in 2 Samuel, a man much to be admired.
He Didn’t Use The Fact He Was A Stranger Or Newcomer To Keep Him From Serving (15:19).  He had been with David for all of a day when David and his servants and cohorts fled from Absalom’s pursuit (15:20).  If anyone ever had a right to hide behind such an excuse, it was Ittai.  He was a foreigner and had only come “yesterday” (15:20).  But, his desire to serve was too great !
He Had Untainted Loyalty (15:21).  Ittai’s response to David is remarkable.  He says, “As the Lord lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in whatever place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also your servant will be.”  He was a man that would serve wherever his king was, whatever his king wanted, and whatever it cost him.
He Was A Leader Of Grown Men And Children (15:22).  David permits Ittai to cross over with him.  Such was the influence of Ittai that “he and all his men and all the little ones who were with him crossed over” (22).  There was something so fearless about Ittai that influenced them to come with him in the face of uncertainty and danger.  Yet, there must have been something so tender about him that caused the little ones to trust him to lead them, too.

He Was Entrusted With Responsibility (18:2).  When David organized resistance against his rebellion son, Ittai was given charge of a third of his entire fighting force.  A man so recently come, Ittai must have been a clearly visible leader.  David recognized how worthy of trust and delegation he was.
Thank God for the heroes, known and obscure, who can motivate us and exemplify for us traits of leadership and discipleship that can help us do great things to the glory of God.

Encourage one another, and build up one another

No man is an island unto himself. We cannot make it alone (Ecc. 4:9). You will not stand among the redeemed in heaven without having had your many encouragers to uplift you. Nor will you so stand without having lifted up the discouraged yourself.

Amalek was a powerful opponent of Israel at Rephidim. God’s people had just fled mighty Egypt, and they continued to face adversity. Their leader, Moses, went up a hill at Rephidim with God’s staff in his hand. Aaron and Hur accompanied him. As long as Moses held up his hand, Israel was winning the battle. When his fatigued arm drooped, sagged, and dropped, Amalek got the upper hand. Imagine holding your hand up for a protracted period of time. The aching and pain soon compounds. Exodus 17:12 says, “But Moses’ hands were heavy.” Physically, he was at his limit. Thankfully, Moses had an Aaron and a Hur to support his hands, “One on one side and one on the other. Thus his hands were steady until the sun set” (13). Ultimately and consequently, “Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people” (14).

Look to Aaron and Hur for your example. All around you are people with “heavy hands.” Will they successfully make it to the setting of their sun? Many do not. Many would, if they had someone to encourage them. Our congregation has so many with “heavy hands.” Christian adults without a Christian spouse need us to lift up their hands. So do widows and widowers, whose “help meet” has gone on ahead of them. What about our young people, still in the fledgling stages of their personal battles with peer pressure and identity? Lift up their hands! Elders, burdened with the responsibilities of leadership and shepherding, are not exempt from weariness of spirit in their fight with Satan. Hold up their hands. Young parents, for whom a typical church service can be a twelve round contest with their little one(s), need to be encouraged.
Make up your own list of heavy-handed folks. They may be losing ground to their spiritual enemy, ready to give in and give up the fight. Your overtures and comfort might turn the tide for them. Take Paul’s admonition to heart, and “encourage one another, and build up one another” (1 Thess. 5:11).

Taken to the gas chamber

A crowd of men, women, and children huddled together at the train station…
Dressed for a long journey and standing with their bags at their sides, they spoke in low tones. Armed men in the grim uniform of the SS, the feared wing of the Nazi army, surrounded the travelers.
The people shivering on the platform were not criminals. They were Jews, French Jews who had been hauled from their homes by the occupying solders and French Nazi sympathizers.
The non-Jewish French watched these events unfold with increasing concern. After all, these people were neighbors and friends. The group included the watchmaker and his family, the lad who sold newspapers, the old lady who made beautiful quilts. Now they were being “relocated.”
The plumes of smoke could be seen even before the train was heard. The townspeople cast a nervous eye toward the train platform as the black, soot-belching locomotive ground to a halt.
Armed guards herded the Jews into the train cars. They went cooperatively, putting up no resistance. Concerned observers wondered why this was taking place; but they told themselves that things would be fine, that there was no need to worry about these friends and neighbors. They were in good hands.
How could they believe that? Because neatly printed in French on the door of every box car was the reassuring logo, “Charitable Transport Company…” (Wayne Rice)
THOUGHT: We can also be deceived today. Though a political ideology can seem harmless — even good — it can represent a value system that undermines the sanctity of marriage, the family, morality, the church, respect for life, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Just another innocent looking boxcar…like those that took millions of Jews to the gas chambers. — Mike Benson
