The Bible Not Out of Date

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of the soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.” Hebrews 4:12-13

The story is told of a European trader who traveled to Africa and happened to pass by a cannibal who had been converted to Christianity. He asked the converted cannibal what he was doing and the man replied, “Oh, I am reading the Bible.” The trader scoffed, “That book is out of date in my country.” The African convert replied, “If it had been out of date here, you would have been eaten long ago!”

I had the privilege of traveling to Nagaland back in 2010. The South Hill congregation in Fayetteville, Arkansas became involved in helping to have a dramatized version of the New Testament recorded in the Naga Language. I became acquainted with a Brother Kikon who runs an orphanage in Nagaland. He was telling me a little about the history of Nagaland. He said that the people in the mountains of Nagaland used to be headhunters and collected skulls; however, he delighted in telling me that when they were converted to Christianity that they became “headhunters” for Jesus and now collected souls. I learned in some of my research for this trip that there are more Baptist churches in Nagaland than there are in the state of Alabama.

There may be many who believe that the Bible is out of date. They believe that the Bible is out of touch with what the modern world needs. The Bible itself contends that it is a book for all people and for all times. The passage quoted above from Hebrews declares that the Bible lays bare the soul of man to his creator. The Word of God penetrates into the very motivations behind the actions of men. The reason many may want to cast the Bible aside is the fact that the Bible condemns their actions and their very motives for those actions. Men have always resisted the constraints of God’s Word. The word of God declares, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life— is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” That is strong medicine for a sick world. It is a prescription that the man of the world rejects and refuses to take. However, it is the only cure for the disease of worldliness.

The Apostle Paul admonished the young evangelist Timothy, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:15). If we want to be approved by God our Creator, we must be diligent students of God’s Word. It is not out of date, it is timeless.

“…and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:15-17

Semper Fidelis (“always faithful” or “always loyal”)

U.S. Marine Cpl. Caleb Earwood wanted a moment with his bride-to-be Maggie before their wedding ceremony on Saturday, May 23, 2015. However, they also wanted to stay true to the tradition of the groom not seeing the bride before the wedding on wedding day.

Just before the wedding ceremony began in Asheville, N.C., Caleb was guided to a cabin where Maggie was waiting. Without facing her and breaking the well-known tradition, he backed up to the open doorway where she stood. He reached his hand back and she grabbed it. As they held hands and bowed their heads in opposite directions, Caleb led them both in prayer to God to seek His blessings on their marriage. Caleb prayed for the couple’s marriage, asking that their union be strong enough to serve as an example for young couples. Maggie was trying to hold back her tears. “It broke me down,” Maggie said, “to know that we felt the same way about God. It just made me happy.”

“We were about to take our first steps in life together, and we didn’t want to take a step without it being in God’s will,” Caleb Earwood, 21, told TODAY.com.

The photo of the couple holding hands in prayer has gone viral. The photographer, Dwayne Schmidt, posted the photo on his Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/dwayne.schmidtphotography) with this comment: “I have photographed a lot of weddings. This has to be one of the best things I have ever got to see, much less photograph. Before the ceremony and before they saw each other, Caleb said a prayer for their marriage and lives. AWESOME!!!” The photo was posted on May 23 and, at the time of this writing, has more than 8,670 shares and over 54,800 likes. *

To ask for God’s blessings and to build one’s marriage upon God and His Word is the most important factor in a strong and lasting marriage. Actually, it is the most important thing for ANYONE – married or single, young or old – to build their lives on the Rock of Jesus Christ. “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock” (Matthew 7:24-25).

Our sin condemns us (Romans 6:23), but God is “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2 Peter 3:9). He gave His Son to die for us so that we can be saved and receive the gift of eternal life (John 3:16).

As Caleb prayed, don’t take a step without it being in God’s will. Jesus said, “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day” (John 6:40).

It is the will of God that each of us “look to the Son” and place our faith and trust in Him (Acts 16:30-31), turn from our sins in repentance (Acts 17:30-31), confess Him before men (Romans 10:9-10), and be baptized (immersed) into Christ for the forgiveness of our sins (Acts 2:38). Those who choose to follow His will and accept His offer of salvation on His terms will receive God’s forgiveness and the gift of eternal life (Romans 6:23). Those who continue to follow His will with the attitude of “semper fidelis” (always faithful), will be continually cleansed by the blood of Jesus (1 John 1:7).

Won’t YOU follow God’s will?
