(Written in honor of sweet Marlee and Maren who reminded us all of the beautiful faithfulness of God’s rainbow.)

Genesis 9:13 “I am putting my bow in the clouds. It will be the sign of my covenant with the world.” GNT

Unimaginable storms brewed on the horizon and anxiousness surely mounted as Noah contemplated the sky. This new phenomenon called “rain” pelted the roof of the ark, erasing any peace the survivors might have had. Without a doubt, their past few days had been stressful as God shut the door on the only world they had ever known.

But Noah’ faithfulness to the Great I Am was evident as their vessel floated upon the waters. Undoubtedly there were nights of apprehension as the ark thrashed about from the raging wind and rain, hurling both human and beast to the floor. Did Noah ever stop to doubt his carpentry skills, fearing their only means of survival might break in two and sink into the abyss?

But as storms finally ceased and light stole through the clouds, God revealed a second brand-new phenomenon to Noah: His rainbow. This brilliant bow of colors unveiled God’s faithful promise, not only to Noah, but to all humanity. How breathtaking it must have been for this family to finally behold color. No doubt, Noah’s family had experienced color-withdrawals from the hues of green grass and trees and the vibrant shades of budding flowers during those long months of water-darkness.

Long ago, God revealed his rainbow-promise to Noah and that bow remains a beautiful reminder of His faithfulness to us today.  So consider:

Isn’t it fitting that for us to behold His rainbow, we must look up? Up from this earth with all its hardships and trials. Up to behold the heavenly realm of our Father whose love is boundless. Up to receive a wonderful reminder that the solutions to our problems do not lie here with us but with a God who longs to direct our paths.

And. . .

Isn’t it just like God to make His promise beautiful? Have you ever considered that God’s sign of faithfulness could have been the raging storm instead of a beautiful bow? In the storms we would stand in awe of Him and be constantly reminded of His great power. Yet, in place of mightiness, God chose His faithful promise to remind us of His goodness and love.

And. . .

Isn’t it just like God to make His bow appear when we need it most? Stormy seasons of life render us weak and worn. It is when we are at our weakest Satan seeks to invade our hearts and lives. But God’s promise to chase away the darkness and walk with us through the dark storms that threaten to break us remains true.

We, like Noah, are called to trust. It is one thing to trust the promises and protection of God when life is calm. It is quite another to trust when we fear we are drowning in problems. Sisters remember, the frightening storms of life may never stop, but neither will the beautiful rainbows. We need only to look up.

Father God, may we ever remain grateful for your faithfulness.

Blessings,

Rita Cochrane
